作者简介
萨克雷（William Makepeace Thackeray, 1811-1863），英国小说家。父亲是东印度公司的税务员兼行政官，萨克雷出生于印度的加尔各答，四岁时父亲辞世，萨克雷随之被送回英国受教育。后入剑桥大学，一面写作诗歌，同时热衷于赌博，在欧陆各国过着放浪形骸的生活。在德国游学期间结识了大作家沃尔夫冈·歌德，并曾一度至巴黎攻读美术。萨克雷用其父的遗产做投资杂志及银行代理，均告失败。萨克雷自1833年起即用笔名在报刊发表文章，也出了几本书，但直至写出长篇小说《名利场》，才被世人公认为与同时代的狄更斯齐名的天才作家。除写作小说外，他的散文也独树一帜，《巴黎小品集》、《爱尔兰小品集》、《势利眼集》，亦文笔隽永，为广大读者所喜爱。
